Your Soul’s Portrait

by Jorge Vicente at freeimages.com

Imagine you were given a blank canvas and asked to paint a portrait of your soul.

What would you paint?  You may choose to use bright and vibrant colors, or you may paint with shadowy, dark colors.  You may paint a peaceful meadow scene or slow moving river in the mountains to symbolize your soul.  If your honest and willing not to hide your true soul, you would paint pictures of various sins which have stained your soul.  In truth, there would be a mixture of good and bad on your canvass.  How do you paint guilt and remorse?

What would you paint to represent your soul?  Would tears flow as you painted?

If we are honest with our evaluation we would have to reflect on the good and bad history of our soul.  “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).

Now that you have finished your painting, I would like for you to consider another image.  Let your mind’s eye drift back to Christ hanging on the cross.  Look up and see his physical pain as he hangs there out of love for you.  Now witness his blood flowing from his thorn pierced brow.  See his blood trickling down from his pierced side onto the dirt and sand of Calvary.  Now reach up and touch his side.  Go ahead and get your hands covered in his sweat and blood as you touch his now lifeless flesh.  Don’t wipe the blood off!  Take your hands covered with Christ’s blood and smear it all over your painting.  Let the blood of Christ cover all of your sins, even let the blood cover the good and peaceful parts of your soul.

Don’t you see … the only thing that truly matters when it comes to the condition of our soul, is not the scars and marks it carries from our lifetime, but the blood of Christ which covers it!  Isn’t that a peaceful and wonderful thought!

“When I see the blood, I will pass over you …” Ex. 12:13

“We have not been justified by his blood …”  Romans 5:8
