Gardening Time and the Unbreakable Law

Our garden is in full harvest mode.  I enjoy the bounty of the harvest; fresh sweet c orn, luscious red tomatoes, fried okra, and much more.  My wife is working hard to pick and preserve the garden vegetables.  She cans and freezes so we can eat good food all year.  Gardening takes lots of work.  But it is wonderfully consistent and amazing.

Gardening reminds me of the one law in the Bible that no one can break.  It is the unbreakable law.  It comes true each year when we plant our garden and is true for the many fields of corn and soybeans.  The Apostle Paul declared this unbreakable law, “for whatever a man sows, that will he also reap” (Gal. 6:7). My whole family was involved in planting our garden.  We chose which vegetables to plant.  The packages told us the type of vegetable that would come and the general time frame till harvest.  We have not broken this simple law yet.  Every time we plant corn, we get corn.  Never have we planted cucumbers and got watermelons, much to the kids’ disappointment.  The law also involves proportional truths.  If we want a lot of corn, we have to plant many rows of corn.  If we don’t want a lot of cucumbers, we don’t need to plant two rows of them (can you tell we have a few too many cucumbers!).

We understand this simple unbreakable law in the garden.  It is the foundation of agriculture.  But we often think the law can be broken in our lives.  But it is always true in our lives as well.  Paul said, “For the one who sows to the his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life” (Gal. 6:8).  The marvelous grace of God offers us forgiveness, but the law of sowing and reaping still applies.  We will still face the consequences of the seeds we have sown.  If we sow discord and lies, then we will reap broken relationships and distrust.  If we sow selfishness, we will reap loneliness.  If we sow lust, we will reap disease and broken marriages.  If we sow greed, we will reap bitterness and discontent.  But if we choose to sow love, we will reap joy.  If we sow mercy, we will reap kindness and mercy in return.

When you go out to the garden and start picking your precious harvest.  Remember, you fully expected and knew you would get what you planted; it is no different in life.  Thus, we should all carefully consider what seeds we are sowing as we live each day, because each of them will produce a harvest!
