Exploring the Trend to Eat Natural

Eating healthy and natural is a hot trend these days.  For example, people are interested in eating organic.  A FoodNavigator story said, “The U.S. [organic] industry is expected to go from $21.1 billion in 2010 to $36.8 billion in 2015.”

Preservatives and other non-natural additives are considered harmful and a whole food diet is being adopted by many.

I think there are many beneficial merits to this trend.  We are concerned about what foods we put into our bodies, and Amanda does a great job of feeding us a healthy diet.

Here are my thoughts on this trend from a spiritual perspective.

  1. We are accountable as stewards for our physical bodies (1 Cor. 6:19-20).  We should be concerned with our health, it does affect our ability to serve the Lord  (Mat 25:14-30).  I am not saying we have to eat organic, that is your choice, but there is a spiritual principle of stewardship of the body that should be recognized.  This principle should be considered when thinking about your diet, exercise, and use of addictive substances like tobacco and alcohol.
  2. The spiritual is more important than the physical (Mat. 6:25-33, Mat. 10:28, 1 Tim. 4:8).  Some folks can be so concerned about exercise, diet, and nutrition for their physical body, but give very little concern for their soul. Parents can do this with their children, ensuring they eat a healthy diet, yet rarely feeding them a spiritual diet.
  3. We need to adopt the same attitude when it comes to faith.  We should want to return to the most basic, natural form of faith in Christ that we can. We should want to take away all the additives and preservatives that have been added by traditions and doctrines of men and simply follow the doctrines of the New Testament (Mat. 15:7-9, Rev. 22:18-20).  We should always be seeking to practice the “apostles’ doctrine” (Acts 2:42).
