The “Immeasurable Influence” of a Good Woman

Happy Mother’s Day!

I have to admit I have trouble choosing a sermon each year on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.  It just seems that the sermons can tend to sound the same each year.

One of my favorites came when I first came to Mayfield, Kentucky.  A revered former elder who is now gone on to his reward stopped by the office.  His name was John Boyd and I always enjoyed visiting with him.  He was a former POW in WW2 who endured months of abuse and physical starvation.  He was a former Mayor and city leader.  But first in his heart was the Lord and His work.  He stopped by not just to visit but to encourage me to preach a sermon on the title “The Immeasurable Influence of a Good Woman.”

Brother Boyd spoke of the difference women had made in his life.  Beginning with his mom and especially through the influence of his wife who strengthened him in Christ.  He noted how many of the church leaders had been converted by their wives.  He emphasized the concept of “immeasurable.”  In that we on this side of heaven have no idea how much good has been done by women for the kingdom.

I was wise enough to take his lead and preached a sermon that year on the theme.  I shared these four ways that women have done immeasurably good as mothers, wives, and Christian women.

  1. In Faith Development (2 Tim. 1:3-5, Acts 16:1, Jochabed, Deut. 6:4-7)
  2. In Teaching Godly Living (Titus 2:3-5, Prov. 1:8, Prov. 29:15)
  3. In Sacrificial Service (Titus 2:5, Phil. 2:3)
  4. As the Emotional Center of the Home  — The Family’s Heart  – (The love, care, and nurturing they provide to the home.)

Mothers and wives need to remember their importance does not come because they cook, clean and shuffle kids.  Rather their importance comes in the influence for good they have because they love God and love others.

I know as I reflect upon my own life.  I would have to use John’s same word “immeasurable” to describe the good that has been done for the kingdom of God by godly women such as my grandmothers, mother, mother-in-law, and wife.

On this Mother’s Day let me ask you to reflect on the “Immeasurable” good that has been done in your life through godly women.

Thank you for your perspective on the immeasurable goodness of Godly women and their real importance to God and the Kingdom. I’m reading a new book speaks just to that sort of thing. Pastor and writer Dr. Tony Evans and his daughter, Chrystal Evans Hurst, have just written a book called “Kingdom Woman,” being released in July 2013. It’s an inspirational and uplifting book. Dr. Evans says that he and his daughter wrote the book to “challenge women to look higher than where you are to whose you are, and to be transformed by the truth of being a Kingdom Woman.” The book encourages women to set their eyes on Christ and to pursue what God has created them to be. More information and free devotional downloads from both “Kingdom Woman” and Dr. Evan’s previous book “Kingdom Man” can be found at kingdomwomanbook.com.
