Sin and Cherry Tomatoes

When tomatoes start coming off each year in our garden I think about Brooke eating them as a baby.  She likes them now.  Here is a cute story with an important lesson I wrote back in August of 2008.

Cherry tomatoes are so delicious to eat, and they look so good with that red glow. This year, we have produced a small ton from our two plants in our garden. Amanda and I enjoy eating them like candy throughout the day and at meals. Actually, we are even getting tired of them now. These little tomatoes have also provided a good laugh for us this year. You see, they are setting out at most of our meals. Brooke, my sixteen month old, without fail at every meal will reach and “uh, uh” until we give her a tomato. She thinks they look so good, yet every time she puts them into her mouth and bites into them, she immediately spits them back out. Maybe it is the texture and the “squirt” of the tomato, but without fail it goes in and comes back out. Sometimes two or three times during one meal. Brooke, I think, has finally learned she doesn’t like these tomatoes.

So what is the point of this cute story? For a while we were amazed at her continued desire for these appetizing little red tomatoes. We thought, “Why doesn’t she learn?” But the reason I believe was that each time it looked so good and everyone else was eating them, so it had to be good this time. This story reminds me of us and sin. How often in our lives has sin been that cherry tomato that looks so good? Even though it keeps messing up our lives, and we try to spit it out, we keep going back and trying it again. Satan makes it look so appetizing. We must learn from our mistakes and experiences (Phil. 3:12-16). Don’t keep falling for Satan’s deception. Remember it is foolish to keep doing the same things over and over that results in trouble and misery. Heed the words of James, “Do not be deceived” (1:16).  No matter how red and delicious sin looks, don’t keep going back for more tries!
