Calling to Remembrance Memories of Mom

happy-mothers-day-I am excited about this year’s Mother’s Day sermon taken from 2 Timothy 1:3-10.  Most of us have fond memories of our mothers and what they mean to us.  In this passage, Paul is talking to his son in the faith, Timothy, about his mother and her influence.  He also speaks to Timothy about what he wants for his life.  Paul’s message is a call to remembrance for all of us that had loving Christian mothers.

When I Call To Remembrance . . .

  1. Mom’s Tears (v. 4) – Paul speaks of tears shed at the separation of Paul and Timothy.  Moms shed many tears as they raise and love their kids through life.  Their children are dear to their hearts.  Being a parent now, I realize the anxiety and stress parents feel. Moms shed tears because of their great love.  If your mom has passed, maybe you need to shed some tears today for her.  That is good and appropriate.
  2. Mom’s Fatih (v. 5) – Paul calls the faith of Eunice, Timothy’s mother, sincere.  It was not fake or disguised, but real and true.  Kid’s see their mother’s true faith.  You don’t hide your real self from them.  Timothy was instilled with a knowledge of the Holy Scriptures from an early age (2 Tim. 3:14-15).  Most of us that are Christians today owe a great debt to the sincere faith of our mothers!
  3. Mom’s Confidence (v. 6-7) –  Paul encourages Timothy to use “the gift of God” that Paul had given him.  This reminds me of the confidence mothers have in their children.  Mom’s believe in their kids when no-one else does!  They are typically their biggest supporter. Moms are biased, and that is okay. They see the tremendous potential and believe their child can move mountains.  Successful adults who accomplish their goals and dreams began because they had a mother who helped encourage and inspire.
  4. Mom’s Courage (v. 8-10) – Paul then tells Timothy to not to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ.  Christian moms want their kids to be themselves!  They want them to be faithful to Christ, standing strong in a sea of sin.    Moms help kids understand who they are and who they are to live for as a Christian. They give them courage.

When I remember my mother and the years I had in her home, I am grateful for her tears, faith, confidence, and courage.  She taught me so much and provided so much for me.

I am thankful for my wife’s tears, faith, confidence, and courage that she lives each day on display for my four kids.    She is a great blessing to me and the kids.  I am also grateful for my mother-in-law and the model she displayed for my wife.

Happy Mother’s Day to all!  I hope it is a special day as you call to remembrance your mom’s tears, faith, confidence, and courage.
