A Conversion Story: “I Read the Bible!”

I have known her since coming to Mayfield, but I never knew how she came to Christ.  She is a sweet older widow lady, the kind who is the backbone of the church.  She stopped by my office one day before ladies’ class and shared her conversion story.  I will not soon forget it.

She said she grew up in a nominally religious home that attended a denominational church.  When she was a teenager she started dating her future husband.  He was a member of the church of Christ.  She went with him to church some and quickly saw some differences in teaching and worship style.

This perplexed her, so she developed a plan.  She settled on reading the Bible for herself.  So she read the Bible.  She learned that many things she had heard growing up was not in the Bible.  She read about God’s love, Jesus, baptism, the church, and worship.  She compared what she read with what she was hearing in attending the church of Christ.  After completing the Bible through the first time, she still had questions, so she did it again!

[important]I said, “You mean you read parts of the Bible.”  She said, “No.” I said, “You mean you read the New Testament.”  She said, “No, I read the whole Bible.”   [/important]

She was baptized into Christ for the remission of her sins because that is what she had read in the Bible (Acts 2:38, 22:26, 1 Peter 3:16, Rom. 6:3-5).  She has been active and faithful in the church of Christ ever since, because she wants to be a part of the church she read about in the Bible (Acts 20:28, Eph. 5:23-27, Acts 2).

Her story amazed me.  Would teenagers today read the entire Bible to find the truth?  Would I read the whole Bible in search of truth?  Do we still want truth like ages past?  I think I know the answers, and I don’t like them.

The answers we are looking for are in the Bible.  We don’t have to depend upon a preacher or pastor.  We don’t have to trust in our parent’s faith.  We can read God’s book for ourselves.  It was written to us and for us!  We don’t have to go to Google!  We need more patience and persistence in seeking truth.  We need more confidence in God’s Word!

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  John 8:32
